As part of the PartyParty Reads series, we investigate and try to extrapolate from the reading habits of some of Europe’s most prominent leaders. Our goal is to identify books that influenced their ideologies, worldviews and decision-making processes.

In the wake of his brutal invasion of Ukraine, we’re starting this sub-series with books that played a role in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s political journey. Curiously, Putin and his biographers (see our list of sources below) paint a varied picture of the books that influenced him. A look at these various books and in the meantime hope to learn something about Putin’s mysterious character.

PartyParty unequivocally condemns Russia’s actions in Ukraine. But in line with the principle “Know thy enemy”, it is worth understanding the books that inhabit Putin’s world –  whether they genuinely shaped his beliefs or are simply another cog in his propaganda machine.
