“The smart ones learn at other people’s expense.” This age-old Hungarian proverb has always rung a bell for me, even though I might rephrase it now. I believe even the smart ones can be quite stubborn, especially when young and new to politics, and often believe they know everything best. But time has a way of teaching us the invaluable nature of experience—not just our own, but also that of others. And politicians, despite their occasional stubbornness, can greatly benefit from learning from the experiences and missteps of their counterparts.
