In just over a week, Slovakian people will elect their new government, basically choosing between populist former prime minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), and Progressive Slovakia, a liberal party founded 5 years ago. Smer has a slight lead, and a much clearer path to a governing majority with smaller parties.

The campaign so far has been eventful, to say the least.

  • At a press event organized by Smer-SD, former finance minister Igor Matovič (OĽANO) kicked former interior minister Robert Kaliňák in the chest,
  • OĽANO politician Tomáš Holkovič hit a man during a campaign event,
  • Smer is calling for the closure of the Slovakian-Hungarian border due to incoming immigrants,
  • while the National Crime Agency (NAKA) is investigating the Slovak Information Service (SIS), the country’s intelligence agency
  • However, the most dramatic charge for Slovakian democracy is that Fico is saying ever more clearly that the election is being rigged and might be stolen from him.
