In April 2022, Viktor Orban has won the Hungarian election for the fourth time with a two-thirds majority. Even though the main opposition parties joined forces for the first time, Orban’s Fidesz Party won with more than 54% of the popular vote, crushing the opposition, which only received 34%. This is the fourth consecutive victory for Fidesz, a victory that came despite corruption scandals, inflation and tensions with Europe. In this article, we explore some of the takeaways behind this triumph to get some knowledge on their success rate. 

How did Fidesz manage to keep winning? The most important thing is their enormous financial advantage: Fidesz can use almost unlimited amounts of state funds for its communication campaigns, while businessmen close to the party (made rich through public procurements) also finance its campaigns through various means.

But financial advantage is not enough in itself to win by such a wide margin. It is worth looking into how they campaigned and what can be learned from it.
