Help or hinder — The implications from EU commission banning TikTok

While Instagram Reels might show last weeks US Congressional TikTok Hearing two weeks from publishing this article (IYKYK) — content creators on TikTok instantly created and shared hundreds of videos during the proceedings that ‘clapped back’ at US lawmakers’ questioning of TikTik CEO Shou Zi Chew. One of my personal favourites was the WiFi question from Congressman Hudson which had already amassed 20 Million views in 3 days. While I’ve certainly laughed at nearly every parody that makes its way onto my ‘For You Page’, it leaves me with more questions than answers this side of the Atlantic.

Weeks before the US Congressional Hearing became a new meme unto itself, EU Institutions banned TikTok on all government-related work devices, citing concerns over cybersecurity, data privacy, and espionage. The decision comes amid a wave of similar actions taken by governments worldwide. With all these concerns over the app, we are left with exploring the implications of the EU Commission’s actions and the broader context in which it takes place.
