PartyParty Reads: Dennis C. Grube — Why Governments Get It Wrong, And How Can They Get It Right

“If politics is ultimately the art of persuasion — of convincing voters that your words and actions are making their lives better — then it is imperative that those words and actions align.” — Dennis C. Grube

At its heart Dennis C. Grube’s Why Government’s Get It Wrong is an enlightening self-help book for politicians as its secondary title, “And How They Can Get It Right,” reveals. Grube — a professor of Politics at Cambridge, originally from Australia, where he was a political speechwriter — has deep interest in the way storytelling influences the success of policy-making and how political decision-making passes through to institutional memory. His short and light book is an invitation around the campfire of a political strategist to listen to his true stories of contemporary world politics, which he recounts as captivatingly and colourfully as Sheharazad’s one thousand and one tales. While we are familiar with many of these stories, they have not yet been served to us as memorable fables about avoidable political mistakes.
