An important part of Emmanuel Macron’s brand was effectiveness: after upending French politics and gaining a parliamentary majority with his new party in 2017, he embarked on reforms long thought to be impossible in France, such as liberalising France’s strict employment rules.

In 2022, Macron’s renamed party, Renaissance fell short of an absolute majority, suffering a blow to his style of governing, which was not centred around any compromise with interest groups or other parties.
