Rutte’s fourth cabinet has now collapsed over immigration policy. His liberal VVD was pushing for stricter immigration controls in a country where inflation and surging housing and gas prices have overlapped with an influx of migrants. His coalition partners disagreed and the Christian Union, the smallest coalition party, forced the issue to a head, leading to the government’s collapse and Rutte’s resignation.
