Ukraine faced a poignant dilemma—it planned parliamentary elections for this October and presidential elections for March 2024. The general elections have been postponed due to Russia’s brutal 20-month-old war in the country, and with no end in sight, it seems unlikely that a presidential poll will happen next year. The decision to delay elections is fraught with moral, practical, and security-related dilemmas. 

At the heart of this complexity lies a democratic paradox—how to uphold democracy amidst the ravages of war while preserving the unity in the country, the credibility of the government and the nation’s reputation on the global stage.
