What to do when my coalition government just failed? The validity of any answer to this question very much depends on the respective context. What applies in any case: The strategic course of action should be revised before events unfold. 

From specific preparations for the day of the takeover, targeted actions during the following week (setting up a campaign team, commissioning surveys etc.) and the first month (events including data collection etc.), to a party congress serving as campaign kickoff – there was nothing then-Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz had not thought of in his script for becoming Austria’s Chancellor in 2017.
