2022 was the year that Belgrade’s Europride became famous for all the wrong reasons. The Government under the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) initially wanted to ban it altogether. This led to an outpouring of sympathy from the European political community, with many representatives visiting Belgrade in solidarity.

This visibility in the European media put pressure on the political parties. After much haggling, the government finally allowed a much smaller version, with 1,000 people celebrating in the streets of Belgrade in September. And then the parade was attacked by right-wing hooligans. More than 80 people were arrested.
